Wedding Budget

One of our iHEARThmong readers was wondering about a general budget for a Hmong-American wedding. Well, here it is!

Keeping your wedding budget on track is the most difficult thing to do. Our original budget was $10,000 total but, that definitely was not feasible after knowing were going to have over 500 guests and the venue we chose. By the way, John and I both felt that we still weren’t able to invite many of our friends as our families made up the majority of the 500 guests. So sorry we couldn’t invite everyone! :( We wish we would have invited more of our friends!

1) Make a list of items you want for the wedding.
Pick and choose the list of items with your groom (i.e. a videographer, photobooth, photographer, flowers, etc).  I was fortunate to have a laid-back groom. For me, having a videographer and photobooth were on my priority list. I would say that there were times we didn’t agree on everything and got into heated discussions… but, post – ‘wedding’ day it was all worth it.  Hint: Sometimes he won’t understand what you are talking about until post-wedding day. lol!

2) Connect with family + friends.
We were fortunate to have talented and supportive family and friends! Singers, photographers, fashion designers, make-up artists, etc. Many of our family + friends helped with the wedding as our wedding gift. You could make a list of tasks and delegate to your close family + friends. Thank you to all of YOU who helped (you know who you are) and making our wedding day simply amazing!

To give you a general idea, here’s our initial budget for each item. Items add up quickly and you get through $10,000 pretty fast. For each item, I would research that item, contact vendors for price quotes and create a spreadsheet of the item, vendor and price quote.  If a vendor was out of my budget, I would let them know.  For example, wedding chair covers and sashes typically cost $2.50 to $3 per chair. It took me quite a while before I found my vendor on craigslist. He rents out quality chair covers for $1 to $1.50 per chair cover. Check him out at garzarental.com. He’s based out of St. Paul, MN and was great to work with via email/phone. You definitely need a HUGE van to haul those chair covers. Also, make sure to have money saved up for all the deposits you will have to make for each vendor.

Venue $3000
Drinks + Wait Staff + Kitchen Rental $5000
Photographer $2000
Videographer $1200
Photobooth $1000
Wedding Dress $1000
Rings $1500
Gifts $500
Decorations + Flowers $300
Printing + Programs $100
Cake $400
Food $4000

TOTAL: $20,000

With research and detailed planning, you can have your dream wedding under your budget. We saved for an entire year and post-wedding we came under budget by $5000 with the help of family + friends!

DIY Rope Necklace

Discovered a DIY Rope Necklace from Stripes + Sequins. Click here on the original post on how to make it. Love love her DIYs and check out her ‘blog roll’ which lists MORE DIY bloggers.

1) The first rope necklace I made took me about 1 hour . I didn’t have twine so, I hand-sewed white ribbon so I could tie it into a bow in the back. Here’s the finished product.

2) Then, I started experimenting with different types of knots via youtube videos. Basically, it’s similar to making a HUGE bracelet. These took me about 30 minutes each as I couldn’t quite figure out the “middle” of the necklace . Not quite sure what I feel about them yet.

Which rope necklace do you like the most?

Spring Bling + Shoe Finds!

Accessories:
Purchased some jewelry essentials over the last month or so at my favorite store… dahn dahn dahn… yes, forever21.  My other favorite accessories spot is h&m. What surprises me is that sometimes I find things in WI or MN that I can’t purchase at the three-story forever21 or the h&m here in San Francisco, CA. Too many fashionistas buying the “good” stuff quickly. ;)

1) Gold necklace – found a similar one from UO with pink detail here
2) Cocktail Ring
3) Rhinestone Bow Cuff in silver/clear  here
4) Rhinestone Bow Cuff in peach/gold here
5) Pointed Flat Collar Necklace here

Shoes:
1) Zara Look-a-like Tan Open-Toe Wedges from DSW: Recall from the 2011 season, Zara had these open-toe wedges in black. Well, a month ago, I was bridesmaid shoe shopping with my sister-in-law at DSW in MN and oh my gatos… found the same wedges in tan! Score! Love the architecture of the wedge and neutral open-toe pumps will leave your legs looking long!
2) f21 Leather Detail Sandals: $12.80 from f21 in Milwaukee, WI. Perfect for the summer.
3) Brown ankle boots: $18.50 from Buffalo Exchange in Berkeley, CA. While there, I also discovered a cute boutique shop called “Sway” with quite the clothing + accessories.

DIY Silver Chain Necklace

I’ve been DIY – Necklace crazy. While searching for materials for an upcoming DIY project at Home Depot, I discovered they sell chains for $0.69/foot. I bought 2 feet of each chain and a connector ring pack. All you need to do is take the connector ring and place the links in accordingly. You could make 2 separate chain necklaces or put them together.

Total spent: less than $5. Total Time: Less than 2 minutes to make!

Final result: Two chain necklaces. Score! I’m also thinking of going back for more and spray painting the chains gold or gold plating them. =)

DIY Chain Collar Necklace

Saw a similar chain collar necklace on ASOS here on sale from $347.90 to $78 and then while browsing blogs I discovered a DIY on how to make it on on a pair and a spare. Yay! Click here to learn how to make it.

Here is my final result. Ta-da!

And… here, is how I styled it. Work OOTD with light pink blazer (boutique shop), mauve top (f21 shown previously here), tan pencil skirt (h&m) and nude flats.

I’m debating on opening an etsy store. Let me know what you think!

Our Wedding Trailer + Tips: Choosing the Videographer

Here is our Hmong-American wedding celebration trailer by Lee from vaughterweddings.com. I flew in from 70 degrees + sunshine in Northern California to 40 degree weather + rain in Wisconsin. For our wedding day, we were blessed with wonderful weather. Lee was able to capture our wedding day beautifully and even incorporated some fun stuff I saw from other wedding videos.

Tips on choosing the videographer:
1) Budget
Always have a videographer in your budget. My budget was less than $2000. Don’t skimp because you can’t afford it! You will want to cherish those memories.
2) Have a vision
Research other wedding videographers and have a list of the top 10 videos you enjoyed watching. Check out youtube + vimeo for wedding videos. Search “wedding trailer”.
3) The Location(s)
Choose your location wisely for bridal preparation + creative wedding photos OR have your wonderful photographer + videographer do that for you! Our bridal preparation was shot at Cambria Suites in Appleton, WI (my house was too crazy/busy with all the family cooking), creative wedding photos were at Asylum Point Park in Oshkosh, WI and our wedding was held at the Grand Meridian in Appleton, WI.
4) Be YOU.
Have a consultation with your videographer ahead of time to customize your wedding video to showcase you + your spouse.
5) Most importantly, have FUN!

It was a pleasure working with you Lee. If you are in the Wisconsin area and need a videographer, I definitely recommend Lee from vaughterweddings.com. Check out his vimeo and facebook for more wedding videos!

If you missed the bridal prep video click here.

The Wedding Dress(es)

Wedding madness is over. If we decide to renew our vows in the future, it will be a destination wedding. I realized after the fact… no wonder newlyweds book a honeymoon. Being a celebrity for a day was exhausting. Needed more than 24 hours of sleep to fully recover. Now that the wedding is over… I can share the wonderful goodies with you!

Here are my tips on how to save on wedding dress(es). Yes, I had 3 dresses like Kim Kardashian. lol  I was fortunate and blessed to purchase/receive three wedding dresses for less than $1000!

1. Go on wedding blogs and enter into wedding dress giveaways.
I entered into 2 giveaways for a dress from simplybridal.com on weddingchicks.com and greenweddingshoes.com. All you have to do is write your name and email under the blog post.

A couple of weeks later, I received an email…

“You have just won a dress from SimplyBridal!”

Then, SimplyBridal sends you a promo code to order the dress you want. If you don’t win, don’t worry! The dresses on SimplyBridal are very affordable, customized and great quality.

The dress I ordered was the ‘Penelope Gown’ and it came vacuum packed!

2. Customize your dress. Buy the fabric + have a seamstress sew it for you!

  • Hmong Dress: Network with Aunties or find a friend who sews. I was fortunate to have an Auntie that had connections! This dress was designed by my Auntie Ger – Macy Lor and sewn by Paxia Vang in Milwaukee, WI. So talented! Why a Hmong wedding dress down the aisle? My mom wore Hmong clothes down the aisle inspiring me to wear Hmong clothes down the aisle as well. It was definitely a Hmong-American wedding!
  • Grecian Dress: My grecian dress was inspired by Phillip Lim. The first time I saw this dress was on Stephanie Williams Photography. I started to search for the dress and found it on oncewed.com under their “used wedding dresses” tab. The buyer was going to sell it to me for $500 and I decided to wait. Guess what happened? Yes, someone else bought it. Tip for future brides: When you see ‘the dress’ and it’s in your price range, BUY it! ;) I don’t mind gently used clothing… but, my mom said when you have your wedding everything should be new to represent the new chapter in your life. I was determined to get this dress… so, I started to look around for a local seamstress. Yelp helped me find Karin Mosseri Couture in San Francisco, CA. She was amazing to work with and had superb knowledge on how to make a dress (i.e. pattern making, knowledge on fabric, etc.). Make sure you + your seamstress have the same style/ideas by having a consultation.

3. Make alterations on your own (at your own risk!)
I was inspired by Vera Wang and could tell that the dress I won didn’t really ‘fit’ the right way on my body type. One late Saturday night, I decided to get rid of the purple around the dress and used a layer of tulle to make sleeves. Took over 5 hours to cut and hand sew the tulle. But, the finished product was worth it! Here’s a before and after…

Photographer Profile: EvNtsaum Ais Photography

Facebook. Website.

Tell me about yourself.

“Hello iHeartHmongers!

Gosh, a little bit about myself, hmm where to start…well…I like all things fun and artsy…anything that can hold my sporadic attention span for more than a few minutes at a time, is in my book, A-Ok! It’s rather funny because by nature, and by day trade, I have to be pretty serious all the time with the utmost professionalism. I’m an HR Executive Search Recruiter, manager, and strict organizer by day and a mom, fiance, and frazzled, unorganized, art nut by night! it’s almost a stark contrast, I know, but I think that’s the reason why I love all things artsy so much, it’s the relief that allows me to keep my sanity after a long day’s work living in the adult world as part of corporate America.

Photography is a way for me to be able to try and show people the world through my eyes. I believe everyone has a unique style and that’s what really sets us all apart from each other in the world of art. In someone else’ work, we are able to see a glimpse of the world through their eyes. Who really truly knows if we all see the world in the same colors, hues, and shades right?!

Photography for me, is still fairly new. I have only been seriously shooting for about 1 1/2 years. I’m not a tech nut so when I pick up a camera, I know that this button adjusts this and that button will make my photo look like that if I set it up to here or to there. But if anyone were to ask me to write it all down step by step, I’d be a sputtering fool. :) I depend on my tech nut fiance to take care of all the “boring” stuff and leave the fun stuff to me!”

What is your inspiration?
“What inspires me is seeing work by other artists. For me, there is no greater inspiration then the end results of another’s inspirations. I believe it is a never-ending cycle wherein we continue to inspire with the inspiration we receive from others.

As such, inspiration for me, can come in any form, a simple picture, idea, word, or thought, or something someone may have said to me, either directly, or in passing that sets my creative juices flowing.”

What tips do you have for future youth?
“I could not have learned as much as I have learned without mentors and without asking questions.  As we have grown up, we have always been told that there is no such thing as a dumb question, and I truly believe this.  When you are new to an industry, you need a teacher, without a teacher or a means from which you learn, you won’t be able to go very far.  While online tutorials, books, and manuals are full of useful information, there is no substitute for that of a pair of hands willing to show you exactly what to do.  Practice as much as possible, and never give up.  When you feel as if you are at your wit’s end and cannot find another ounce of inspiration, remember the reasons why you wanted to learn and why you wanted to do what you are doing.  If you have a photo that was your first source of inspiration, revisit that source to remind yourself why this is all worth it.  If something motivates you once, it is bound to motivate you again!”

What do you like to do for fun?
“I have such a short attention span and I always feel like there is so much to do! Maybe it is because I have sooooo many interests, that it seems sometimes there are not enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do. What I do in my spare time really depends on how I’m feeling and what has been my inspiration as of late. My spare time will find me doing anything from reading true crime books, to thrillers, to watching sleep depriving scary movies (yes, even the lame B rated ones), to singing, scrap-booking, creating charms, watching Hmong movies (yes, I said Hmong movies…the kind that make you laugh, cry, mad, and cause your hair to stand on end because it’s so impossibly corny! Ha ha!). Fill in the rest of the space with trying to fit in time to spend with my family and overworking myself and some days I feel like life is passing by far to quickly!”

What are 2 goals you are currently working on?
“I consider myself still pretty green as far as experience goes in photography, so my list of goals is never-ending two of the most prominent goals that I plan to complete at least within the next few months is to put my special made(courtesy of my fiance), beauty dish to good use in at least 1 fashion photography shoot and at minimum learn how to use it. And the other, is to shoot my first wedding, live, and in candid action. I hope to be able to do both very soon so look for updates on these two items in my blog soon to come in the next few months! :)

Thank you for sharing your story! You are so inspiring.
